School Students, Young People and SARS-CoV-2 in Luxembourg

first published: 21.03.2021

Following is the collection of weekly data for new SARS-CoV-2 cases detected in Luxembourg (residents only) since the beginning of school year 2020/2021 (15 Sept 2020) along with the number of school students (primary, secondary and competence centers, for private and public schools together). The evolution of share of school students of the total cases since last week of January 2021 show that nearly a quarter (up to 25%) of weekly cases are school going children.

Following is similar data as above but instead of ‘all cases’ (shown above), here the data is for number of weekly cases detected in resident population of age below 20y olds (0-19y). Here, as expected, the percentage of the school students account for majority (90-100%) of the cases in the age group 0-19y old.

So, in theory, for the recent weeks for which school-children data is not available, 90% or above of the 0-19y old cases may be assumed to be school-going children.
